What is Bojagi? (보자기)

A bojagi is a Korean wrapping cloth that is used to wrap almost anything and holds a dear part in Korean culture. With globalization and the movement for environmental friendliness, bojagi has gained traction throughout their world because of their aesthetics, eco-friendliness, and user-friendliness.

Wrapping anything with bojagi can turn into a fun and creative process because of the many ways to create a knot to secure your bojagi wrapping. 

The charm of wrapping a gift with bojagi is that the bojagi also becomes a part of the gift. The recipient is also given an opportunity to learn the art of aesthetically wrapping gifts with a fabric wrapping cloth.

And bojagi is closely related to furoshiki, which is a traditional Japanese cloth. Both bojagi and furoshiki are used to serve a very similar purpose which is to wrap gifts, frequently used items, and household items, and both are eco-friendly & reusable.

Types of Bojagi

Bojagi comes in a variety of different styles. On Joteta, you'll find bojagi that have different colored fabrics on each side which are referred to as double-sided bojagi. There is also the standard bojagi with one color. And, there are the lucid-styled bojagi that are semi-transparent and hold their own unique appeal.

Bojagi can also come with designs on the fabric and the traditional designs are a range of flowers. Traditionally, bojagi was made with ramie or silk. In modern times, it's common to find bojagi made with other materials like polyester.  

Types of Knots

Knots refer to the way one finishes wrapping their gift with bojagi. Knots are functionally used to secure the bojagi from unwrapping and to give the gift wrap a beautiful look.

With the popularity of bojagi, many people have invented unique and beautiful ways to create knots. 

The most common are Hydrangea Knot, Bow Knot, and Hold Knot.
